Hi
here is an intetersting email from mark Balogh of the famous sail company. http://www.baloghsaildesigns.com/pro.html
I am not sure of the 2010 date for the even yet, but it seems pretty much a done deal that we will be doing it the thrid week of july for this dry run.

Paul,

There are pros and cons to any time of year in that area. It largely depends on personal priorities. The pros of late July might be that you are less likely to have delays from too much wind. The cons are that you are getting into the time of year when light or no wind days are more likely. There is wind much of the year there but less in late summer. The other downside is it can be very hot and humid and the insects can be pretty impressive particularly when the wind is light. Late summer can occasionally see some awesome thunderstorms. Everything varies from year to year so you can only go on the averages and take your chances. I am personally more inclined to consider a trip to the Core Sound/Pamlico area in spring or fall as the heat/humidity and insects are a deterrent for me. In a sailboat with motor even winter can be very nice. The cons of spring and fall are the possibilities of strong fronts causing delays on a scheduled trip. Also people with school age children often have travel restrictions during school. Understand that were it me and if the weather now could be expected to be the same as when I lived there and if it followed averages, etc, I would probably go more for late June than Late July but even then too much wind can be a possibility. May/June is very nice in some years. Part of this is personal preference as I like more wind rather than less but your choice will have to take into account the type of boats you expect etc.
It is often a roll of the dice but you will find out a lot on your dry run.

Good luck,
Mark

I generally do my cruises on Pamlico Sound and Chesapeake Bay either before late June or after mid-September. Temperatures are a bit more moderate, smaller chance of those severe thunderstorm (although they are always a possibility). I think a mid summer trip is do-able, but it could be less than comfortable. I did a little research and found this page....

http://www.windfinder.com/windstats/win ... teras.htm#

If I'm reading it correctly it shows July/August having the lightest winds of the year, the lowest possibility of wind and the highest temperatures. Seems to confirm Mark's experience.

I wonder about a trip around the time of the summer solstice. It is after school gets out (for those in school or with kids in school), before the busy fourth of July weekend and with the longest days of the year for enjoying dinner and conversation as the sun goes down in a nice little cove.

Steve,
Thanks for that link. We will have to look at bumping up the 2010 event to Late June early July. I for one would like to avoid conflict with the Texas 200.

I have added your link and a couple of pics from it to the Weather Page on the Web site.

Un Abrazo,
Bill
