No doubt this little expedition is going to see its' share of biting insects.

If they are anything like the mosquitoes I've experienced in the Chesapeake Bay and the green headed flies that nearly ate me up near Chincoteague, VA, we are gonna need some powerful bug repellent!

If any of you have had an EXCELLENT experience with a commercial or home brew type, please post them here. I'm looking to hear about the best (or worst).

These hungry buggers can ruin a trip! Let's get some good "anti-bug" info posted on this so everyone enjoys themselves both on and off the water.

Everyone!! Please read this VERY ACCURATE description of the dreaded greenhead fly!

http://www.greenheadfly.com/Greenhead.html

These buggers are really trouble.
Be sure to read the little box about Brigantine, NJ. Their situation mirrors those of the outer banks.

Hi
I have found that you don't have any problems during the day. It is at sunset that things get biting. That said I always have my tent setup and have eaten but sunset. A tent with netting is a must. I usually write in my log in my tent for a while then go to sleep and wake up a few minutes before dawn. I only use deet based products and the one with the highest concentration. that is usually backwoods off which usually has 25 or 30%. I have tried all else and it is the best. Also eating things with garlic in it helps. In general I don't find it a problem because of my sleep arrangements, bed time, and wake time. If I was to stay out on the beach after dark it is because I want to build a fire. fire is the best way to get rid of biters, and with some backwoods on they stay away. i have never been bitten during the day in these parts. Thats my plan.

I used to live in Brigantine N.J. The locals there swear by Avon's Skin So Soft, normally diluted with water and put in a spray bottle. Never got into exact ratios, but your Avon person would probably know all about it. I have used it straight on a wet washcloth, works pretty well. Not always effective on mosquitoes IME. Here in Delaware mosquitoes are the bane of fishermen. I take garlic capsules and use deep woods OFF. That lets me keep fishing when everybody else is running for cover at dusk.
